Let's talk seriously about websites

Here is the problem as I see it

Your website is real estate—it’s your place on the internet. It’s not really for your church members to stay updated; Facebook handles that way better. Your website is for people who are looking for a church. Maybe they’re new in town, visiting, or just not happy where they’ve been going. That’s when they start searching, and your website is what they’ll see first. It’s your public face.

So if you don’t have a website, you’ve basically lowered your chances of reaching those folks. And if the website you do have doesn’t look great... well, you can probably guess how that goes.

Websites need occasional maintenance. New pastor? Update it. Fresh photos? Add them. A stale website sends the wrong message.

It’s worth putting on the agenda at your annual meeting—just like you’d check on insurance or the church van. Also, make sure the login and password aren’t locked away with just one person. Life happens—people move, get busy, or forget. Someone else should always be able to access it.

Think of your website like your church sign on the highway. If the bulbs are out or the letters are falling off, folks notice. Keep it fresh.

A checklist - Prepare to build a website here...

True Story

A few years back, we built a website for one of our smaller Midwestern state associations. As part of the project, we created individual sites for churches that didn’t have one. One of those churches didn’t have a pastor at the time, so I listed my own email as the contact for the site’s form.

A few months later, I got an unexpected message. A woman from the community asked if the church’s parking lot could be used for a memorial service - a little girl had been hit by a car just down the street.

Let that sink in: she didn’t walk up to the church door. She didn’t call a church member. She found the church’s website and reached out through a contact form. Because the church had a website, the community saw it as a place to turn to in a moment of deep grief.

I reached out to the state Promotional Director, tracked down a contact for the church, and passed along the request. I also encouraged them: Show up. Hand out water bottles. Offer to pray.

Your neighbor is at your digital door - will you answer?
